Steps to Become a Foster Parent with CHCPA
Attend an Information Meeting
Begin by attending a free informational meeting hosted by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) or by Caring Hearts Child Placing Agency (CHCPA). These sessions provide an overview of the foster care system and the responsibilities involved.

Submit an Application
Complete the Foster/Adoptive Parenting Application (Form 2286), providing detailed personal information, references, and consent for background checks.

Undergo a Home Study
Participate in a comprehensive home study process, which includes interviews, home inspections, and assessments of your household's suitability for fostering.

Complete Pre-Service Training
Attend the Texas New Foster/Adoptive Parent Pre-Service Training, a 19-hour course covering topics like trauma-informed care, child development, and the foster care system.

Pass Background Checks
All adult members of the household must undergo criminal history and abuse/neglect background checks to ensure the safety of children in your care.

Meet Health and Safety Requirements
Ensure your home meets safety standards, including adequate sleeping arrangements, fire and health inspections, and up-to-date vaccinations for pets.

Obtain CPR and First Aid Certification
Complete CPR and First Aid training to be prepared for emergencies and to meet licensing requirements.

Receive Approval and Licensing
After successfully completing all steps, you will receive approval and be licensed as a foster parent, allowing you to welcome children into your care.
